Pope Gelasius declared February 14th as St. Valentine’s Day during 498 A.D.

By the Middle Ages, recognition of the holiday clearly had taken hold. During that time, common belief held that birds begin mating in the middle of February. In the fourteenth century, Chaucer wrote, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day, whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.”

Whether religious or not, he is to be thanked for many of our ancestors who sought love….and without that, many of us may have never become.
